Tim Burton dives into the rabbit hole with ‘Alice in Wonderland’
I learned today via Yahoo! Movies that Tim Burton’s next project is “Alice in Wonderland.” At first, I wasn’t that excited. But then I saw some pictures and read some more.
The story won’t be the classic 1865 tale retold. Instead, Alice returns to Wonderland as a teenager years after the time frame of both of Lewis Carroll novels. This should certainly allow for Tim Burton to take us on a wild ride down the rabbit hole.
Burton’s favorite Johnny Depp is starring as the Mad Hatter. After seeing his versatility throughout his career, this seems oddly fitting but will certainly be interesting to watch. Think back before “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and how you were uncertain that he would be able to fill the chocolatier’s shoes. When the movie came out, though, it worked marvelously.
Depp isn’t the only one to be in a Tim Burton film again. Helena Bonham Carter will play the Red Queen (the villain from the second story, “Through the Looking Glass”), which to me is a perfect match. Looking at her publicity photo instantly cements the pairing.
As for Alice? She’ll be played by Austrialian actress Mia Wasikowska. You might recognize her from HBO’s “In Treatment.”
Anne Hathaway rounds out the cast as the White Queen.
Besides the cast, it looks like Tim Burton is taking the cinematography to a whole different level. Just from the few publicity shots, it’s already apparent this movie will look like no other seen before. Burton told Disney’s D23 Magazine, “It’s kind of a mixture of some distorted live action and animation. I can’t relate it to anything because I’m not sure what to relate it to. It’s kind of new territory for me.”
I can’t wait to see the trailer! Well, and eventually the movie, which comes out March 5, 2010.
